SIDEBURNS
Sideburns have always provided an opportunity for men to showcase their virility – and explore their vanity. Some of the earliest sideburns were worn by the Hittites, who lived in present-day Turkey and Syria around 1600 BC. They shaved off all of their facial hair, including their eyebrows, apart from a sideburn on either side of the face which was plaited. Amongst the Hindu military class known as Kshatriya they were a sign of authority, and for Meiji warriors in 19th century Japan they were compulsory. In 18th century France, they were known as favoris and worn shaped across the cheek in fashionable jaunty angles. More recently, sideburns have provided a hyper-masculine option for Teddy Boys, 70s Rockers – and leather daddies.
